Probably developmental defects.
Pathogenesis

Developmental inclusion of secretory cells within the hepatic parenchyma results in the progressive accumulation of fluid and the development of a cyst.,
Epidemiology

Much more common in males (4:1 to 5:1)
Usually detected in adulthood as asymptomatic masses.
General Gross Description

Usually in the right lobe of the liver
Can be quite large, up to 20 litres in capacity

Simple cysts lined by cuboidal to columnar epithelium.
