| Etiology Rupture of the amnionic sac with free "bands" of amnion. Bands can wrap around fetal extremities and/or umbilical cord to cause amputation or demise | ||
| Pathogenesis Unknown what causes rupture Bands entangle and mechanically constrict and amputate limbs, | ||
| Epidemiology Spontaneous, usually not accompanying abnormal pregnancy 1/10,000 live births with signficant (30%) mortality rate Sporadic, non-recurrent | ||
| General Gross Description Bands are delicate, fibrous and may be difficult to find Examples: | ||
| General Microscopic Description Amnionic epithelium and mesoderm No inflammation and little degeneration Examples: | ||
| Clinical Correlation Outcome dependent on what the band is wrapped around Unclear whether infants that fuse to the chorion often with massive limb or body wall defects are part of same syndrome. | ||
